I can’t believe this guy has had Netflix series made out of two of his graphic novels. He really isn’t very talented. His characters have the finesse of lewd stick figures and there’s really not much to these stories. I finished both of them in a couple minutes each. It goes without saying that the characters in The End of the Fucking World are not likable but they’re not particularly interesting either. There’s nothing recognizably human about how they operate, they’re just thin nihilistic caricatures. I’d still be interested in watching the series The End of the Fucking World because I really like Alex Lawther as an actor, but they must have really milked this flimsy graphic novel for material.

(WARNING: My Review of ‘I Am Not Okay With This’ contains spoilers)

I gave this book a minimally higher rating because I could see it had potential. If it had gone in a different direction I think it could have been a good story, although just like with The End of the Fucking World the artwork was mediocre at best. With this book we have a Carrie-like story about Sydney, an alienated, unlikable girl with telekinetic abilities she unleashes against the guy who raped her best friend. Between Sydney’s bicurious leanings and her telekinetic trouble with orgasms, this could have been a cool character study if Sydney had had some development and gotten a better handle on her powers, rather than committing suicide on a water tower by blowing her own head off. Oh well. I have the feeling the Sydney in the Netflix series will probably have a more satisfying character arc.
