I was really looking forward to this book, but I ended up being disappointed by it. The premise of a kid struggling to come out to his Vietnamese immigrant parents had potential, but it ultimately failed to move me. I didn’t like the illustrations, they were flat and the characters seemed lifeless. The image on the cover tricked me into thinking the art was better than it actually was. The characters often lacked pupils, making their eyes look unnervingly empty.

I felt like the author put more work into designing the costumes than drawing the people. The idea of using fairy tales to flesh out the story was a good one, but the books spent so much time with the fantasy elements that as a result, the characters were poorly developed. They were one-dimensional and since the main character Tiến has no interesting character attributes it was hard to become invested in his story.
