Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Since Christmas just ended a few days ago, we’re doing recent additions to our collections. I’m including ones I got for gifts and a few I ordered online afterward.
Two old YA books…
Lucy the Giant by Sherri L. Smith
Realistic fiction novel about an outcast escaping from her abusive home life.
Gifted by- my brother, James. It’s coming in the mail.
2. Life is Fine by Alyson Whittenberg
I think this is about a girl with a troubled home life who has an inappropriate relationship with a teacher. Christmas cheer all-around! Like ‘Lucy the Giant,’ it used to be in my public library but they ended up downsizing their copies.
I bought this one myself online the day after Christmas.
4 LGBTQIA+ books…
3. Uncommon Girls by Carla Grant
This is a memoir by a woman whose daughter is transgender and autistic. I’m really interested in gender identity and neurodiversity, so I’d been curious about this for a long time.
Gifted by- my mom and dad
4. What It Feels Like for a Girl by Paris Lees
I’m not actually sure if this is a memoir or fiction. It’s about a trans girl growing up in Britain in the 80’s, I think?
Gifted by- Mom and Dad
5. My Heart is a Little Wild Thing by Nigel Featherstone
I spent more on this book than I would have liked but I was really curious about it. It’s got a gay theme and is about toxic family relationships.
Gifted by: bought a copy for myself online.
6. Faults: Letters to Everyone in My Hometown Who Isn’t My Rapist by Cecelia Gentili
This should be fairly sad but I’m curious about the idea of a memoir-in-letters, and I would like to read more non-fiction books by transgender people.
Gifted by: bought for myself online
… 3 WTF books
7. Monsters by Emerald Fennell
I’ve heard this one compared to one of my favorites, ‘The Wasp Factory.’ ‘Nuf said. I need to get off my ass and watch ‘Promising Young Woman’ one of these days too.
Gifted by: bought for myself online.
8. Pigtopia by Kitty Fitzgerald
I’m reading this now. The combination of grotesquerie and sentimentality is really odd. Review coming soon.
Gifted by: My sister, Patricia
9. Eustace by S.J. Harris
Weird-ass graphic novel. I try to buy graphic novels in print if I can’t find them at the library because reading them on your Kindle is a sorry experience.
Gifted by: bought for myself online.
10. Cat House by Michael Peak
I’ve heard this described as a story about the sex trade with cat characters. The concept grabbed my attention and the cover art… adorable.
Gifted by: bought for myself online
… And Anti-Christmas novels (demons and devils and such)
11. How to Make Friends with Demons by Graham Joyce
Great title
Gifted by: Mom and Dad
12. And the Devil Will Drag You Under by Jack L. Chalker
Also a great title, and I love the retro-looking cover art with the little demon guy staring straight at you.
Gifted by… bought for myself online.
What are the recent additions to your bookshelves, Christmas gifts or otherwise? Let me know in the comments!

Oof, I can’t tell you how many books I’ve missed out on due to library weeding! Especially in YA, I know that once they hit the 5-year mark I’ve got a ticking countdown clock to their inevitable disappearance. Making it past the decade mark is a rarity unless they’re bestsellers.
All of this is to say, Lucy and the Giant is one of those, but I didn’t realize until this moment that its author is Sherri L. Smith! I’ve read a bunch of her later ones but somehow never noticed this. Cool pick.
