20 pages in and I was already in love with this protagonist. Gilda is atheist lesbian with an anxiety disorder who obsesses about death constantly. She carries the burden of all the horrible things that could happen on her shoulders, and when she accidently gets a job as a receptionist at a church she pretends to be straight and Catholic to fit in. While coping with her addict brother and her hopelessly-in-denial parents, Gilda becomes obsessed with the suspicious death of the elderly receptionist who was previously in her position.

I have severe OCD and I found myself relating so much to this hot mess of a woman-child. There were so many points where Gilda would think about something and I would be like “Oh my God! That’s me!” Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead is more of a character-driven than plot-driven book but I tend to like more psychological novels and I was thoroughly invested in this protagonist and the weird little world she inhabits. There are elements of mystery but they don’t overwhelm the emphasis on being a character study and incisive portrayal of mental illness.

Gilda’s character was so honestly written and this was one of the best portrayals of anxiety disorders and depression I’ve ever written. I was so worried about what was going to happen to Gilda when I was reaching the end of my book that my hands literally started shaking, I haven’t had that kind of reaction to a work of fiction in a long time. The only criticism I have of this book is that it ended a little bit abruptly and I thought Gilda’s character arc left me with some questions. Overall I loved this book and I would recommend it to anyone who struggles with anxiety or knows someone who does.
